Student driver
When will it end? Me in the passenger seat, clutching my seatbelt strap! I like to drive. If we go anywhere, I am usually the one to drive. I have to let my son drive now, he is 16 and has his learner's permit. He will be getting his license in August, so I have to let him behind the wheel. Sometimes it is very nerve-wracking! Today, I found myself closing my eyes as we approached a traffic light. I know he is going to stop, and basically he is a good driver so far. I don't want to yell, "GET ON THE DAMN BRAKE!" You young mothers - beware! -Driver training is way worse than potty training, now I am the one going pee in my pants!!! For several years when I worked I was a field training officer. I had to teach rookie cops how to high speed pursuit drive, with lights and sirens on! I have either lost my nerve or my near death experience has caused me to turn into a wimp. I would feel much better if I could have my foot on one of those passenger side brakes, like they have in driver training cars. I think, for me, it is all about giving up control. I hate it. I am gonna be a bitch if I ever have to live in an old folks home!

Hang in there Mom! You haven't lost your nerve...it's just different when it's your flesh and blood behind the wheel. Practice deep breathing while you are in the passenger seat...just don't forget the paper bag or adult diapers!
Good golly Tuff - I was clutching my imaginary seat belt while reading your post!! I can SO feel, and completely agree with, what you are going through! Mine's only 9 right now - but I'm hoping and praying he simply won't ever reach Learner's Permit Age. That can happen, can't it?? Please tell me it can!!.....
I have permantly imprinted my feet prints in a few cars while my daughter was learning.
Other people have left their finger indentions on my dash so I guess that evens things out.
It's nerve wracking when it's YOUR OWN children behind the wheel...they don't seem to listen as well to mom's sitting in the passenger seat...or they get irritated easily when you give advise....Like APPLY THE BRAKE, NOW!!!
Sometimes, I think a stranger could teach them to drive in a much more calmer setting...that's why I always liked Driver's Training classes.
Someone told me that the Driver's Training classes don't drive anymore...that it's just classroom instruction.
It only gets worse. Hang in there.
Oh boy, can I relate to this post! Been there, done that 3 times (count them!) and I'm so glad I'll never have to do it again. I was never a nervous passenger until I had to teach our firstborn (daughter) to drive. Our son was next...he'd driven tractors for years, so that experience was much less nerve-racking. Last but not least, another daughter, suffering from teenage angst, no less.
